Stratolaunch Systems Marks Milestone with Acquisition of First 747-400

Stratolaunch Systems, the US-based aerospace company, has achieved a significant milestone with the completion of the induction process for its first Boeing 747-400 aircraft, registration N744VG (msn 32745). The acquisition took place earlier this year during the bankruptcy proceedings of rival Virgin Orbit.

The acquired Boeing 747-400, with a manufacturing serial number (msn) 32745, is 22.2 years old and was previously associated with Virgin Orbit. Stratolaunch plans to repurpose this aircraft for its orbital launch platform operations.

The newly acquired 747-400 will serve as an integral component of Stratolaunch’s orbital launch platform, contributing to the company’s endeavors in the field of space launch services. It is expected to support various customer missions in the future.

The aircraft, previously owned by Virgin Orbit (OBT), became part of Stratolaunch Systems during the bankruptcy proceedings of its competitor. The strategic acquisition aligns with Stratolaunch’s commitment to advancing its space launch capabilities.

On December 5, 2023, the 747-400, registered as N744VG, was flown from San Bernardino to Mojave, according to ADS-B data from Flightradar24. The aircraft will undergo specific modifications to cater to its new mission as an orbital launch platform. The modification phase is anticipated to be completed, and the aircraft operational in the first half of 2024.

The newly acquired 747-400 will complement the Roc, which serves as Stratolaunch’s primary testbed and orbital launch platform. The Roc, characterized by its custom-built twin-hull design, plays a crucial role in facilitating Stratolaunch’s space-related initiatives.

 

Stratolaunch’s successful integration of the Boeing 747-400 into its fleet marks a noteworthy development in the company’s pursuit of advancing aerospace capabilities. As the modified aircraft becomes operational, it is poised to contribute significantly to the evolving landscape of orbital launch services and space exploration.
