Scandinavian Seaplanes, based in Norway, is set to pioneer electric aviation in the country by converting its fleet to electric powertrains developed by Dovetail Electric Aviation, an Australian-Spanish company. The seaplane operator, which currently runs a fleet of six aircraft, has committed to five conversions as part of its sustainability strategy.

Dovetail Electric Aviation is advancing its technology with integrated electric systems that include electric motors and battery packs. The company is also enhancing its designs with hydrogen fuel cells to increase the range of their systems. Projects in development include electrifying models such as the Cessna 208 Caravan, and hydrogen-electric versions of the De Havilland Twin Otter and Beech King Air 200.

In addition to its seaplane operations, Scandinavian Seaplanes has announced plans to initiate land-based flights with smaller twin-engine aircraft that can accommodate up to 20 passengers, starting in Spring 2024. Post the launch of the eCaravan seaplane, the operator plans to expand its electrification efforts to include land-based aircraft, starting with the hydrogen-electric versions of the Twin Otter and King Air models.

Founded in 2016 by Daniel Boden, Scandinavian Seaplanes was granted an Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC) and operating license by the Norwegian Aviation Authority in March 2022, allowing it to transport up to 20 passengers. The company, which is the sole seaplane operator in Norway, conducted over 1,300 flights in 2023 from its bases in Bergen, Ulvik/Eidfjord, and Aurland, servicing primarily cruise companies and tour operators in western Norway.

Boden remains the major shareholder, owning 43.2% of the company, with significant stakes also held by Kenneth Jaconsen Holding AS and other private shareholders.

This move towards electrification aligns with Norway’s broader aviation goals. In 2020, the Norwegian Ministry of Transport and the civil aviation authority launched a national programme to promote electric aviation with the aim of electrifying all domestic flights by 2040 and making Norway a leader in electric aircraft operations.
