The air travel industry in the Middle East and Turkey has exhibited remarkable resilience and recovery in the wake of the pandemic, according to various reports and statistical analyses. The region has notably achieved the highest global rate of post-pandemic tourism recovery, as well as leading international air travel arrivals in the first quarter of 2023.

As per the European Travel Commission (ETC), the Middle East emerged as the first global region to have its international air travel arrivals surpass pre-pandemic levels in early 2023, reaching a milestone of 101% compared to 2019 figures. This significant rebound is attributed to successful vaccination campaigns, relaxed travel restrictions, and a strong pent-up demand for travel within the region.

HSBC reports that the Middle East has also experienced the most robust post-pandemic tourism rebound worldwide. In 2023, tourism revenue in the region exceeded pre-pandemic levels by 11%, benefiting from its strategic geographical location, diverse tourism attractions, and investments in infrastructure and digital technology.

Turkey, in particular, ranked fourth globally in tourism revenue in 2023, with earnings surpassing pre-pandemic figures by 104%. The country witnessed a significant increase in both domestic and international air travel, with its flagship airline becoming the first in Europe to surpass pre-pandemic passenger traffic levels by mid-2022.

Enhancements in the air travel experience in the Middle East and Turkey have also been noted. Airlines and airports in the region have implemented various health and safety measures, including the EU Digital COVID Certificate, biometric identification systems, contactless payments, and mobile application services.
