LATAM Airlines Group has officially dropped its plans to take over Boeing 737 aircraft leases from GOL Linhas Aéreas Inteligentes, citing a “lack of meaningful engagement” from the Brazilian airline in commercial negotiations. This decision was detailed in a recent filing with the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York, reflecting a significant shift in the airline’s strategy amid ongoing industry challenges.
According to LATAM, efforts over the past several months to secure 737 aircraft from sources other than GOL have also been unsuccessful. This has led the airline group to conclude that it is impractical to continue pursuing transactions involving the 737 model. This development is part of the broader narrative surrounding LATAM’s ongoing Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings.
The interaction between LATAM and GOL has been fraught with legal complexities. In March, LATAM Airlines Brasil, a subsidiary operating under the LATAM group, reached out to GOL, proposing a transaction that would help GOL avoid substantial rejection damages claims while enabling LATAM to bolster its fleet amidst a tight aircraft market. However, GOL’s legal team responded by accusing LATAM of interfering with its restructuring efforts, even requesting that the bankruptcy judge enforce certain procedural rules against LATAM.
GOL, currently engaged with various lessors, is contemplating the return of between eight and sixteen aircraft. Meanwhile, LATAM, whose fleet primarily comprises Airbus A320 family aircraft for its narrowbody operations, continues to navigate through the complexities of its restructuring process without the addition of 737s.
