DFW International Airport, the second-busiest airport globally, has achieved record-breaking passenger traffic this summer while unveiling new details of its ambitious $9 billion expansion plans in collaboration with American Airlines. The airport’s CEO, Sean Donohue, shared these updates in a presentation on September 29, 2023.

This summer, DFW Airport marked a historic milestone with the ten busiest days in its 50-year history, averaging more than 250,000 passengers per day. By the year’s end, the airport anticipates serving an unprecedented 80 million passengers, a record high for the facility. The surge in demand is attributed to the travel industry’s resurgence post-COVID-19, along with its strategic location and extensive network.

To meet the escalating demand and prepare for future growth, DFW Airport is investing $9 billion by 2029 to modernize and expand its infrastructure and facilities. The expansion initiative encompasses the construction of a new Terminal F, which will introduce 15 additional gates, and the renovation of Terminal C, enhancing capacity by adding nine more gates through corridor extensions. The project also encompasses upgrades to roadways, bridges, parking, and security systems.

This substantial expansion program is a collaborative effort between the airport and American Airlines, the largest carrier at DFW and its principal partner. Both entities entered into a 10-year use-and-lease agreement in May 2023, facilitating the airport’s capital program and providing financial support and incentives to American Airlines.

Sean Donohue emphasized that this expansion project aligns with the airport’s vision to be a global gateway and a driving force for growth and opportunity in North Texas. The endeavor aims to enhance operational efficiency, the customer experience, and environmental sustainability. Donohue expressed optimism about DFW Airport’s future and its role as an industry leader and innovator.

“DFW is already a world-class airport and a key economic driver for our region,” Donohue stated. “This expansion project will ensure that we continue to provide an exceptional experience for our customers, partners, and employees, while also advancing our role as a leader and innovator in our industry.”
