China Eastern Airlines is poised to expand its international footprint by launching flights to Abu Dhabi, bolstered by a strengthened partnership with Etihad Airways. This development follows a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed between the two airlines, setting the stage for a deeper collaboration that extends beyond their existing ties.

The MOU outlines a comprehensive plan for collaboration, including an expansion of codeshare routes and reciprocal loyalty program benefits. Furthermore, the agreement encompasses cooperation in various operational areas such as Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO), ground handling, catering, lounge access, staff training, and multiple sustainability initiatives.

This enhanced partnership is instrumental in facilitating China Eastern’s goal to initiate services from its Shanghai hub to Abu Dhabi. Discussions are underway with Abu Dhabi Airports, the Department of Culture and Tourism of Abu Dhabi, and other key stakeholders in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) capital to make this ambition a reality.

The synergy between Etihad and China Eastern’s services, especially with the inauguration of Terminal A at Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH), is expected to forge a strong platform for increased air traffic between China and the UAE. This collaboration is also set to enhance connectivity between China, the Middle East, and Africa.

Etihad CEO Antonoaldo Neves highlighted the significance of this MOU as a crucial milestone in establishing a long-term, beneficial cooperation between the two airlines. Currently, Etihad operates flights to three destinations in mainland China—Beijing Daxing International Airport, Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG), and Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport.

On the other hand, China Eastern maintains a presence in the UAE with four routes to Dubai International Airport. According to OAG Schedules Analyser, the airline operates daily flights from PVG and three times weekly from Kunming, Qingdao, and Xi’an.

This partnership enhancement comes shortly after Etihad announced an interline agreement with the Maldives-based carrier Maldivian, expanding Etihad’s network to include 17 destinations in the Maldives, such as Faresmathoda and Funadhoo.

The strengthening of the partnership between China Eastern Airlines and Etihad Airways not only promises to open new routes and travel opportunities but also signifies a strategic move in the aviation industry, fostering closer ties between China and the UAE and expanding global connectivity.
