Air China (CA) has confirmed a substantial order for 100 extended range C919 aircraft from Chinese manufacturer COMAC, marking a significant expansion and modernization of its fleet. The order was officially signed on April 26, 2024, with approval from the airline’s board of directors following the next day. The airline plans to initiate deliveries this year, continuing through 2031.
This new order is part of Air China’s strategic initiative to update its fleet by replacing older aircraft and to accommodate growth in passenger and cargo capacity. The airline anticipates that the introduction of the C919s will lead to a net increase of 7.5% in Available Seat Kilometers (ASK) capacity compared to its 2023 levels. This growth is described as “controlled,” aligning with Air China’s broader objectives for sustainable expansion.
To finance this significant acquisition, Air China will utilize a combination of its own cash reserves, loan facilities, and other financing sources. This follows the airline’s recent move to bolster its financial position through a CNY6 billion yuan (approximately USD828 million) equity issuance to its controlling shareholder, China National Aviation Corporation, completed in early February 2024.
The C919 jets, which are designed to compete with mainstream narrowbody aircraft from Airbus and Boeing, will be a crucial addition to Air China’s existing fleet. As of now, the airline operates a diverse narrowbody fleet that includes Airbus A319-100s, A320-200s, A320-200Ns, A321-200s, A321-200Ns, A321-200NXs, along with Boeing 737-700s, 737-8s, and 737-800s.
Air China’s commitment to the C919 follows similar moves by other major Chinese carriers. China Eastern Airlines has also placed an order for 100 C919s, adding to the five already in service, signaling robust domestic support for COMAC. Meanwhile, China Southern Airlines has committed to five of the aircraft.
This order not only underscores Air China’s efforts to modernize its fleet with more fuel-efficient and technologically advanced aircraft but also highlights the growing capabilities and acceptance of COMAC in the competitive commercial aviation market. The introduction of the C919 into Air China’s operations is set to enhance its operational efficiency and competitiveness in both domestic and international markets.
